Osamu - Rice Field in Hakuba Village Japan, Sugiyama - S0146

“Hakubamura no naetashiro”. The newly planted rice field in Hakuba village at the foot of Mt. Hakuba.   Hakuba is part of Nagano Prefecture in the Chubu district of Japan. The name Hakuba means white horse and was derived by horse-shaped snow on the mountain side during spring time.  For hundreds of years, traders would pass by Hakuba as they followed the famous Salt Road from the Japan Sea to Matsumoto and they would stop in the Hakuba valley overnight to rest.  Today, Mt Hakuba is known for backpacking, skiing, and snowboarding.

The impression is self-carved and self-printed by the artist using 11 blocks and 29 colors. There are slight creases, printer’s creases, and minor ink stains on the margins.

Stone Bridge - Yoshida, Toshi
Stone Bridge - Yoshida, Toshi

Unusual Toshi Yoshida design rendered with white outlines by using an uninked keyblock instead of the traditional black outlines used in Japanese woodblock prints. Trees and foliage frame a view of a garden pond with a narrow stone bridge leading across it. Two figures can be seen through the open window of the house beyond. Lovely muted color palette in this attractive landscape.

This print comes from a group of Toshi Yoshida woodblocks acquired from the Yoshida family and were not originally intended for sale. This print has excellent color and detail. Some slight soiling in margins.  Title written in pencil in bottom margin.

Yasaka Pagoda- Inagaki, Toshijiro
Yasaka Pagoda- Inagaki, Toshijiro

This is a woodblock print of the Yasaka Pagoda in Kyoto done in a modern style. Yasaka Pagoda exemplifies Inagaki’s admiration for the shrines and temples of his native city Kyoto. The Yasaka Pagoda was commissioned in the year 589 and continually reconstructed after its original design.  It became a popular subject for woodblock prints in the years following World War II as a paradigm of truly Japanese architecture. Inagaki’s image of the pagoda is well known to western audiences as the frontispiece of Donald Keene’s pioneering “Modern Japanese Literature: An Anthology from 1868 to the Present Day”, published in 1956. The print shows the coming together of old and new, with the pagoda poking between the modern power lines.

Good condition although lacking in margins.  The print has a Mikumo Ishihara label on the verso. This version of the print is done with a red palate.

Terrace at Montmartre Van Gogh- Okuyama, Gihachiro
Terrace at Montmartre Van Gogh- Okuyama, Gihachiro

“Gogh no Monmarutoru”. Based on Le Moulin de la Galette Terrace and Observation Deck at the Moulin de Blute-Fin, Montmartre (1886) by Vincent van Gogh. From the 1860s, ukiyo-e, became a source of inspiration for many European impressionist painters. They were affected by the lack of perspective and shadow, the flat areas of strong colors. The trend comes full circle as Okuyama is inspired to echo the works of post-Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh in a series of famous European paintings.

Slight foxing and printer smudges on the right margin. Creases on the margins to fit the print into a frame.

Utagawa - Kanagawa, Hiroshige - S0223
Utagawa - Kanagawa, Hiroshige - S0223

This print shows two-storied tea houses on a hillside overlooking Edo Bay with a commanding view of the magnificent seascape.  Women from the tea houses urge the travellers to stop and take a break.  The view is now gone as the land in the bay has been reclaimed to become part of Yokohama.  Hiroshige made changes to several of the designs which had been published already, probably due to the loss of key blocks by fire or the request by the publisher. The first version of “Kanagawa” has different shapes of the foliage, narrower angle of roofs. The treatment of the foreground is also different. Kanagawa-juku was the third of the fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidō. It is located in Kanagawa-ku in the present-day city of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is close to Kanagawa Port. Many of its historical artifacts were destroyed by the Great Kantō earthquake and bombings during World War II.

This is a later print in excellent condition and comes in the original mat.  Publisher was Hoeido and Censor was Kiwame.

Moon Crossing Bridge- Inagaki, Toshijiro
Moon Crossing Bridge- Inagaki, Toshijiro

This is a modern print showing people walking on the Togetsukyo bridge over the Katsura River as seen through the branches of large stylized trees. The 155-meter bridge  is a well-known place of scenic beauty in the western hills of Kyoto. The artistic form of the bridge embodies the aesthetic sense that is at the heart of the Japan artistic tradition.  The first bridge was undertaken in 836 during the Heian Period, but the current construction was built in 1934. The bridge is often used in historical films.  Although the bridge appears to have been built of wood, it actually has columns and beams made of reinforced concrete. Only the parapets are constructed from cypress. Cormorant fishing is done in the vicinity of the bridge during summer nights.  Nearby is Mt Arashi (Arashiyama), a 375 meter mountain located south of the bridge.

The artist uses a blue palate for the large trees in the print with human figures in shades of red. Minor ripple on left margin.

Ferry Landing at Yagiri - Past Okuyama, Gihachiro

This pastoral print shows the ferry station in the Showa era. For the past 400 years, the ferry crossing called the Yagiri no Watashi connects Shibamata and Matsudo city in Chiba prefecture.  This ferry crossing is part of the 100 Landscapes of Japan that represent Japan during the Heisei era. The ferry originated as a way to connect two farm communities on either side of the river. It has an idyllic atmosphere thanks to the novel from Sachio Itō titled Nogiku no Haka (“The Wild Daisy” from 1906).  The novel was made into movies in 1955, 1966 and in 1981. There is also a song about the crossing written by Miyuki Ishimoto which hit number one in the Japan record charts in 1983. He therefore asks them to play a piece, and when they play on the lute and Japanese hard their performance is so skillful that he abandons altogether his plan of going to study in China. At this, the old couple reveal that they are in fact the Emperor Murakami and his consort, the Lady Nashitsubo, and that the Emperor had played the melody on the famous lute called Genj? in the hope that after hearing it Moronaga would give up his journey abroad. They then vanish, but the Emperor reappears shortly afterwards and summons a dragon-god from the sea.
