The five story pagoda in golden twilight is displayed against a blue background. Yakushiji is one of the most famous imperial and ancient Buddhist temples in Japan, that was once one of the Seven Great Temples of Nanto, located in Nara. The temple is the headquarters of the Hossō school of Japanese Buddhism. This print shows the East Pagoda which is next to the Temple. It was completed in 730 during the Nara period and is the only original 8th-century structure at the Yakushiji site. It appears to have 6 stories, but in fact, only has 3 stories due to the inter-storey pent roofs known as mokoshi.
Very good impresion; later printing. Printed on “un”watermarked Japanese paper. Carver was Nagashima. Printer was Horii. Format is Oban tate-e.
