Charming depiction of Takagamine Road in the artist’s home town of Kyoto, lined with handsome tile-roofed buildings. The street rises steeply to the right, a man carrying a yoke over his shoulders making his way past an ox tied to the side of the road. A light rain falls over the scene, the sky darkening to gray. A beautiful modern composition with bold black line work and soft shading in the sky. This shin hanga print is a classic in the transition to a more modern woodblock design.
Format is Oban tate-e. Pagoda theme is a wonderful Kotozuka stylized execution. Kento cut in lower right corner used to align blocks and is not a flaw. Print is loosely hinged to original presentation mat on right side. Orginal mat has Uchida sticker in English with name of print and artist.
