This is a design from Tokuriki’s lovely “Thirty Views of Kyoto” series, published by Uchida in 1936. The print is rendered in a painterly style with subdued colors and soft shading. First edition images from this series are rarely seen on the market. Shimogamo Shrine (Shimogamo-jinja in Japanese), is the common name of an important Shinto sanctuary in the Shimogamo district of Kyoto city’s Sakyō ward. It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Shimogamo dates to the 6th century, centuries before Kyoto became the capital of Japan.
This first edition print has excellent color and detail. The print is mounted to stiff board in the nearly square shikishiban format, ready for display, with a label on the reverse.
