During the late Edo era, although restricted in the small areas in Nagasaki and Yokohama, more foreigners visited Japan bringing some glimpse of the world developing outside of Japan. Most of Japanese including artists had never seen foreigners. The foreigners, exotic animals and goods from overseas made popular subjects in ukiyo-e to entertain the curiosity of Japanese.
