This print is no 19 in the series. It depicts a story from Heike Monogatari (The rise and fall of the family of Taira, that is Heike, who were defeated by the family of Minamoto, that is Genji). Michimori, a son of Heike, was killed by the Genji, and his mistress in her despair, committed suicide by the water. The spirits of both appear one night in disguise of an old fisherman and his woman, and ask travelling monks to pray for them. This scene illustrates the old fisherman and his woman telling the story of Atsumori to the traveling monks.Format is Oban. Light toning. Margins slightly soiled. Top corners thin.
