This print shows two-storied tea houses on a hillside overlooking Edo Bay with a commanding view of the magnificent seascape. Women from the tea houses urge the travellers to stop and take a break. The view is now gone as the land in the bay has been reclaimed to become part of Yokohama. Hiroshige made changes to several of the designs which had been published already, probably due to the loss of key blocks by fire or the request by the publisher. The first version of “Kanagawa” has different shapes of the foliage, narrower angle of roofs. The treatment of the foreground is also different. Kanagawa-juku was the third of the fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidō. It is located in Kanagawa-ku in the present-day city of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is close to Kanagawa Port. Many of its historical artifacts were destroyed by the Great Kantō earthquake and bombings during World War II.
